The Hero and the Fluke

18 year old (Sassy) Melissa Campbell

I ran across this article at the Washington Times about Melissa Campbell. If you don't remember her she was the ex- Marine who called out pathological liar Xavier Alvarez who falsely claimed he was a Medal of Honor recipient.

His case is currently pending in the Supreme Court for violating the Stolen Valor act. What some folks don't know is what happened to Melissa after exposing Alvarez as a fraud. The Washington Times explains:

"I was told it was unprofessional to confront him," she told The Washington Times in a recent interview. The company did not respond to inquiries about her departure, citing a policy of not commenting on personnel matters. Mr. Alvarez declined through an attorney to comment.

Ms. Campbell now works as a family readiness officer for the military. She has politely declined the offers from a parade of lawyers inquiring whether she would like to file a lawsuit against her former employer. She told them she was not interested. While she still wants her name cleared, she said, she doesn't want to spend any more time thinking about Mr. Alvarez.

Indeed, when she was invited by federal prosecutors to attend Mr. Alvarez's criminal sentencing, Ms. Campbell declined. Nor did she have any desire to attend the Supreme Court hearing last month.

After reading this I was simply dumbstruck by the contrast between this woman and Sandra Fluke. Unlike Ms. Fluke, Campbell apparently wasn't itching for a fight or just looking for a reason to be offended. Further, she apparently is not a media whore , er, I mean hound. (gotta watch it, don't want my many advertisers to drop me).

Ms. Campbell could have gotten all gussied up and marched into the Supreme Courthouse, self-righteously assured of her relevance. But she didn't, if fact it looks as if she has put Alvarez and his nonsense behind her and rose above the politics of it. In other words, she righted a wrong (like all good Marines) and moved on to the next mission.

Contrast this woman's actions with one Sandra Fluke. This from Education News:

"Sandra Fluke's Appearance Is No Fluke" – More information about Fluke came out on the Today Show yesterday (see below). She is not 23 but is 30.

She is not an expert on contraceptives but is a rabid women's rights activist. She deliberately selected a Catholic law school knowing full well what their policies were on contraception just so that she could battle them; and even though she is not an expert on women's reproductive health issues and was not chosen to testify before Congress, Nancy Pelosi pulled Sandra Fluke into a contrived "hearing" so that all of us Americans "could be played" by the leftist Democrats.

So apparently the Fluke had this thing planned all along, she was looking for a fight. The only way it could have been better for Fluke is if some prominent conservative called her a prostitute or something so she could get her full fifteen minutes of fame. Glad that didn't happen. Wait, Rush did what? Doh!

However, it looks like that kerfuffle is winding down because it looks like even the Christian Science Monitor (not exactly a bastion of conservative thought) says it's time to move on, but I can guarantee you Fluke will play this until she becomes just as irrelevant as nutcase Cindy Sheehan.

But the point I want to make is just how dissimilar these women are. I decided (lazy as I am) to actually do a bit of research on each women (a full five minutes on Google). Anyway I thought of it this way. If both these women were applying for a job at your firm - who would you hire?

To help in your decision making I have assembled a list of accomplishments and a mini résumé at the end:

Ms. Campbell, a 10 year veteran of the Marine Corps.
Ms. Fluke is a 10 veteran of academia.

Ms. Campbell calls out Xavier Alvarez for dishonoring Medal of Honor recipients.
Ms. Fluke lies in front of congress and gets invited on The View.

Ms. Campbell finds another job after her termination.
Ms. Fluke wants me to pay for her to have sex.

Ms. Campbell's education:
  • Basic Training USMC
  • Ms. Manners Etiquette School
  • Mira Costa Community College
  • California State - Fullerton (Associates Degree, Liberal Arts)
  • Riverside County Sheriff's Academy 2004 Ben Clark Training Academy, Riverside California
  • San Diego State University BA Communications

Ms. Fluke's education:

  • Cornell University:
Interdepartmental major in the College of Human Ecology, Fluke studied in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management and the Feminist, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program. She was president of Students Acting for Gender Equality and treasurer of the Society for Human Resource Management
  • Georgetown Law School:

Fluke is a past president of Georgetown Law Students for Reproductive Justice

Résumé - Ms. Campbell - Here is her linked in page - needless to say this woman has been very busy and very productive. Here are just a very few highlights that stood out to me:

1986 - 1996 US (mother scratch'n) Marine Corps!

2004-2005 Menifee Unified School District - Special Education Instructional Assistant (Special education as in helping kids with mild to severe special needs)

2004-2007 Southern California Edison - Corporate Event Planner (Here she was fired for correctly exposing Alvarez as a pathological liar and dishonoring every REAL medal of honor recipient)

2006-2007 Corona Regional Medical Center - Marketing and Public Relations Coordinator

2007-2008 Capistrano Unified School District - Special Education Instructional Assistant (working with special needs kids again)

2007-2011 US Marine Corps - Family Readiness Officer (You can take the gal out of the Corps but not the Corps out of the gal!)

Conducted outreach, rapport development and mulch-faceted communication efforts which facilitated important two-way communication between the command, 1250 Marines, and over 5000 family members.

2011 Capistrano Unified School District - Special Education Instructional Assistant (working with special needs kids again)

Résumé - Ms. Fluke - Academia….<insert crickets chirping here>

While you can argue the age difference and say that Fluke will accomplish great things. But I will submit this, by the time Ms. Campbell was thirty she had 10 years in the Corp under her belt and near earning her degree at San Diego State.

The Flukester? <insert crickets chirping here>.

The relative differences between these two women is staggering in both accomplishment and character. One looks to humbly make the world a better place, the other looks to make the world bow to her views.

Ms. Fluke wants gender equality? Then my dear Sandra, you need to take a page out of Melissa Campbell's book, she can tell you how to get equity. Why? Because she EARNED it. And not by sitting safely in some women's group gazing at her navel. No this woman went out and did something. And that is something will always be beyond both your reach and understanding and for that I truly feel sorry for you.

Exit question: if you had to hire one of these women who would it be? The real feminist, who is willing to put her life (in the corp) and her job (Alvarez) on the line for what she believes in, or the pampered Ivy Leaguer who's been mollycoddled her entire life and gets shots on the View because some big bad radio man called her an unpleasant name?

Bottom line: I would consider it an honor to work for Ms. Campbell. As for Fluke? Eh, just another shallow bimbo with another political ax to grind with no real value in the big scheme of things.

  10. Excellent article. Thank you for the contrast.

One little niggle (am I allowed to use that word?): The Marine Corps is not a corporation; don't forget the "s" at the end of "Corps." We Marines are touchy about that sort of thing.

  11. I had not heard the story of Ms Campbell before reading this. Her story proves that sometimes doing the right thing may cost ya, but it's always the right thing to do.

Recent events had me out of the loop during the Fluke affair and I had no idea she was a plant from the start.

Very nicely done and a great way to start my day today. Thank you.

  12. Dude, you engaged in the same character assassination, and failed to respond to her arguments.

She never hid who she was, and went to Congress as a response to the all male anti contraception lets go back to the 18th century silliness that passes for GOP politics these days.

You were more polite than calling her a slut, but politeness still does not excuse character assassination as you utterly ignored her arguments.

You don't want abortions but you dont want contraceptions either (and this is private insurance, not taxpayer money)

The world has moved on from this fight since Griswold v Connecticut in 1965 -- and so should you.

    1. Anonymous - thank you for your comment. But I must beg to differ on a couple of your points.

Firstly, Ms. Fluke did indeed hide who she was. When she testified she was identified as a typical 23 year old law school student just trying to make it in this crazy world. When in fact she is a 30 extremist who went specifically to Georgetown to pick a fight.

Second, i find it amusing that you say that its the insurance company who will pay for her contraception. Who do you think pays the insurance companies? Their customers of course. If these companies are forced to pay for Ms. Fluke's contraception - they, being bottom line minded folks, will pass that cost on to those who pay their insurance premiums - so yes I will ultimately have to pay for her to have sex.

You are correct in that I did ignore her argument to some degree but that was not the purpose of this post. What I intended to do here was to draw a distinction between a real feminist and one who plays on on TV. My apologies if that was unclear.

Thank you again for your post.

    2. She forgot to mention that her boyfriend's family is not only quite wealthy, but they're huge Democratic contributors. She also forgot to mention that she was jetting off to California for spring break. Why isn't her boyfriend helping her with her $9 per month birth control? She also forgot to mention that Georgetown offers birth control to faculty and staff through their insurance programs -- they probably don't want to raise student fees any more as many students don't want to subsidize other student's recreation sex. Other than that, her story was full dubious claims and "friend of a friend" accounts. One of the "voices" told her she was raped but she didn't think the school provided medical care to victims of sexual assault? The girl who lost an ovary has a case for medical malpractice, but she wants to focus on the schools lack of "free" birth control? C'mon, you believe this??

  13. You have a VERY good argument going on in there, but the anti-Liberal (big L) pro-Republican vibe all throughout tarnishes it quite a bit with bias. Underpinning everything you say is true, but I really start wanting to tune out when you say things like we're the ones that are going to pay for insurance, etc. - the point should be how she misrepresented herself. She may have a point in addressing contraception, but how she came about it was totally wrong. I think your arguments would be much clearer if you steered away from pro-right wing talk when proving a point. the biggest example is how a marine-corp serviceman would be hired over an ivy-leaguer all other things considered. Really? What's the job? If we're going to war or even business strategy probably the corpsman but what if you need something that actually requires academic analysis? I hope my point is clear.

    Thanks for the info!

    1. Anonymous - Thank you very much for your comment. Point taken. I do think you are correct that I merged two objectives (never a good thing to do) rather than staying on topic. I do the same thing when I write fiction, I will fall in love with at phrase even though it doesn't fit in the paragraph/Story.

A word about your point about it depends on what job they are applying for. It has been my experience that former military folks have much better character/work ethic than those who have not served. That plus I have met several folks from Ivy league schools and almost always I found no difference between them and folks from public schools. Just an observation of mine.

Thank you again for your comment and I will try to be more focused in the future.

    2. Apparently your liberal bias got in the way of actually reading their resumes. Campbell has more experience than just the Marine Corp, although if you've ever been in the service, you'd know this often includes incredible responsibility for such a young person, e.g. multimillion-dollar equipment, lives, rules of engagement, etc. From what I can tell, she's a person of character; Fluke not so much. She has college course work and actual work experience; Fluke knows lots of about gender equality and feminist studies...not sure how that will help with the academic analysis you seem to think is only learned in the Ivy League. I graduated with a bachelors and an MBA from a Big 10 university. I'd take a Big 10 grad over pampered Ivy Leaguer any day, but that's just my bias. I'd also take a Marine over an OWS protester, but I biased...I also served in the Marines.

These things matter in business. I know, I've run a few. The clowns at MF Global and Fannie Mae included plenty of Ivy Leaguers.

I live in Houston and do a lot of work in oil and gas, e.g. E&P, oil field services, pipelines, etc. You'd be better off down here with a degree from UT or A&M than Harvard or Oberlin. Pedigree and how much your daddy wasted on your 12 years of liberal-driven education is not so important here, but character certainly is.

  14. The hearing was about separation of church and state not women's health issues. The federal gov't forcing the church through their (self insured) insurance plans to pay for something that goes against the tenets of their religion. Whether the church pays directly out of pocket or through their insurance company they are still being forced to pay for birth control/abortions which violates their right to exercise freedom of religion. Ms. Fluke was a plant all along. She was invited at the last minute to speak on a topic she was not qualified to speak on, in place of a female minister Democrats had asked to speak (and was qualified). The Dems knew she wouldn't be allowed to speak under the circumstances; not qualified, less than 24 hours before the hearings, which played perfectly into their plan of false accusations with a camera and mic in the room. All the calls for "where are the women?" were staged. The second panel consisted of five people, two being women. All the people complaining about "missing women on the panel" mysteriously were missing themselves for second hearing. This was purely to get sound bites in and change the topic from Obama unconstitutionally usurping First Amendment Rights: Freedom of Religion and the right to exercise it. It was a diversion tactic that played well with the feminist crowd. Obama's polling numbers have been low with women lately. How else to get the base fired up. How do I know? I watched the hearings. Stay focused, he is good at changing the subject in his favor.

    1. Anonymous - thank you for the comment. I did see the shenanagans that the Dems ans specifically Pelosi pulled to get her in the hearing. What kind of stuns me is that they didn't think anybody would check up on Fluke.

Do you think this kind of nonsense hurts their cause or helps it when they are exposed as frauds?

      Delete
    2. Who is exposing it? Certainly not the media... they are in on it. At last check roughly 17K people out of a country of 320M viewed the combined panel hearings. You can bet none of those viewers included anyone from the media. The press is dead.

I agree with GreyLocke, Campbell is awesome, meh to Fluke.

    3. Anonymous - That's just it. Ms. Campbell goes unnoticed because she is not looking for kootoes she just sees a wrong and makes it right. Then moves on. Fluke and her ilk are nothing more than elitist who have their world view that the rest of us must bow down to because we are too stupid to think for ourselves.

      Thank you for stopping by.

  16. It's a question of integrity and you've hit it right on the head. One woman does the right thing at a dear personal cost and then refuses to hop on the victim bandwagon. The other manipulates a confrontation and stands to reap a personal gain from liberal support. Who's integrity is intact? Who do you want your daughter to grow up to emulate? I think the answer is as clear as the distinction between these two women. Yeah, I'd serve with and for Meilissa Campbell any day and, as a veteran, am proud to call her my sister.
